Fuel Tank Tech Ensures Propane Generators Stay Running

Tank Utility lets homeowners monitor propane tank levels from their smartphones

WAUKESHA, Wis. — With as many as 40 percent of all home standby generators installed around the country running on liquid propane (LP) fuel, homeowners need to ensure that their LP tanks have enough fuel in them to support the generator’s fuel consumption during a power outage. For many, that means making educated guesses. But in a world in which you can do practically everything with your smartphone — from opening your garage door to ordering a cup of coffee — that’s becoming less acceptable.

And it’s why home standby generator maker Generac Power Systems recently invested in Boston, Mass.-based Tank Utility (TM), makers of the only homeowner-friendly solution on the market for monitoring LP tank levels with a smartphone.

Generac Propane Generator

“Hoping you have enough fuel for your Generac® home standby generator is not the best emergency preparedness strategy,” said Ray Stanek, sr. product manager, Generac. “Running out of fuel is as bad as not having a generator at all. The Tank Utility monitor eliminates all guesswork about keeping your LP fuel tank full to support your propane generator as well as your other appliances.”

Using Tank Utility monitors with propane generators

Homeowners can install the Tank Utility monitoring hardware to their LP fuel tank in less than 10 minutes, without any tools required. The device connects to the Internet via the cellular network to the Tank Utility app, available for both Android and iOS devices. In short order, the homeowner will have access to their fuel tank level, which is automatically updated every six hours. With the app, users can configure alerts so that they are notified when their LP tank is running low — in plenty of time to do something about it, no matter where in the world they may be.

“The Tank Utility app also helps homeowners gauge their LP fuel usage via historical data,” said Amos Epstein, CEO, Tank Utility. “By looking at trends, they will gain additional insight into how much fuel they use and when. Then they can more effectively work with their fuel suppliers to schedule refills.”

Generac is currently selling Tank Utility monitors through its nationwide network of more than 5000 residential product dealers.
